Work Socks and Insoles: The Secret to All-Day Comfort
Good work socks and insoles are the cheapest upgrades in workwear, and among the most effective for all-day comfort. You can buy the best safety boots on the market, but pair them with thin everyday socks and a worn-out footbed and your feet will still be aching by lunchtime.
What makes a good work sock?
Work socks are built differently from everyday socks. Cushioned soles absorb impact on concrete floors, reinforced heels and toes resist the wear that boots inflict, and arch support bands reduce fatigue. Look for smooth or flat toe seams too, as a ridge across the toes rubs inside a protective toe cap.
Fibre choice matters. Moisture-wicking blends and merino wool keep feet dry, which helps prevent blisters, odour and fungal problems. Cotton-rich socks feel soft but hold sweat, so they're less suited to long shifts in boots.
- Cushioned work socks for general site, warehouse and factory work.
- Thermal boot socks for winter, where they make a bigger difference to warmth than almost any other garment.
- Lighter wicking socks for safety trainers and warm weather.
Always fit boots with your work socks on, not thin trainer socks, or the boots will feel tight once the thicker socks go in. Browse our work socks to find the right weight for the season.
How insoles change the way a boot feels
Insoles transform how a boot feels underfoot. Anti-fatigue insoles return energy with each step, cushioned gel footbeds soften hard standing surfaces, and supportive insoles help those with flat feet or plantar fasciitis get through a shift comfortably. For ongoing foot pain, it's worth seeing a GP or podiatrist rather than relying on insoles alone.
Replacing the flat factory footbed in a safety boot is often the single biggest comfort improvement you can make, and swapping insoles periodically extends the working life of the boot itself. You'll find replacement options in our insoles range.
Insoles and safety footwear certification
There's one catch with safety footwear. Boots are certified to EN ISO 20345 with their original insock, so a replacement can change the fit around the toe cap and, on S1 and above, affect the built-in antistatic properties. Choose insoles the boot manufacturer approves, or antistatic insoles where antistatic performance matters, and check the boot maker's guidance before swapping.
Make sure the new insole doesn't lift the foot so much that your toes press against the toe cap. If the boot feels tight after fitting one, it's the wrong insole or the wrong boot size. Our guide to safety boot S ratings explains what each marking covers.
Care and replacement
For anyone spending eight-plus hours on their feet, this small investment pays back daily in comfort, concentration and fewer aches at home. To get the most from it:
- Rotate two or three pairs of socks so each pair can be washed and dried properly.
- Take insoles out after a wet shift so they and the boot dry fully.
- Replace socks when the cushioning flattens or the heels wear thin.
- Replace insoles when they compress, crack or stop springing back.

Quick answers
What socks are best for steel toe cap boots?
Cushioned work socks with reinforced toes and heels and a smooth toe seam are best, as they reduce rubbing against the toe cap. Moisture-wicking blends or merino wool help keep feet dry over a long shift.
Can you put insoles in safety boots?
Yes, but check the boot manufacturer's guidance first. Replacement insoles can change the fit around the toe cap and may affect antistatic performance.
How often should work insoles be replaced?
Replace them when they flatten, crack or stop springing back, which happens faster with long shifts on hard floors. Swapping them periodically also helps the boot last longer.
