Women's Workwear: Why One Size Does Not Fit All
Women's workwear should be cut for women's proportions, not a men's small handed over in the hope it will do. For decades, women in trades, construction, healthcare and logistics have made do with kit designed for men: rolled-up sleeves, cinched waists and boots that never quite fit. That's finally changing, and it matters far more than comfort alone.
Why ill-fitting workwear is a safety issue
Ill-fitting workwear is a genuine safety issue. Oversized trousers and jackets catch on machinery and ladders, excess fabric snags on racking and fixings, and long hems become a trip hazard. Gloves that are too big reduce grip and dexterity, and boots that are too wide or long make people less stable on uneven ground.
Fit affects how PPE performs, too. A hi-vis jacket that's several sizes too big may not place its retroreflective bands where they were designed to sit. Tight-fitting dust masks must be face-fit tested, and a mask that doesn't seal on a smaller face won't give the protection it's rated for.
The PPE at Work Regulations require PPE to be suitable for the wearer, and that includes fitting correctly. Unisex garments sized for male proportions often aren't suitable. PPE must also be provided free of charge, as our guide to PPE and the law explains.
What ladies' fit actually means
Properly designed ladies' fit workwear accounts for real differences in body shape, not just smaller sizes. Look for:
- Shorter back and sleeve lengths so jackets and tops don't bunch or hang over the hands.
- Adjusted shoulder, bust, waist and hip proportions for freedom of movement without excess fabric.
- A different trouser rise and seat so trousers stay put when kneeling and climbing.
- Narrower boot lasts that hold the heel firmly and reduce rubbing.
- Smaller glove sizes that keep fingertips filled and dexterity intact.
The result is clothing that moves with the wearer, protects as intended and looks professional rather than borrowed.
What's available now
The good news is that the industry has responded. Leading workwear brands now offer women's ranges spanning hi-vis jackets, work trousers with kneepad pockets, safety boots on female-specific lasts, polo shirts, scrubs and maternity workwear. Smaller sizes in work gloves are also easier to find than they used to be.
When a team member is pregnant, review her risk assessment and check that her workwear and PPE still fit and work as intended. Needs can change over the following months, so revisit it rather than treating it as a one-off.
Getting it right as an employer
For employers, providing properly fitting workwear isn't just compliance. It signals that every member of the team is valued and equipped to do the job well. A few habits make it easier:
- Ask, don't assume. Offer ladies' fit and unisex options, as some women prefer a unisex cut for certain garments.
- Use size samples or a try-on session before a big order.
- Keep a size record for each person so replacements arrive right first time.
- Match colours and logos across ladies' and unisex styles so the whole team looks consistent.

Quick answers
Do employers have to provide women's fit PPE?
The PPE at Work Regulations require PPE to be suitable for the wearer, which includes fitting correctly, and it must be provided free of charge. If unisex kit doesn't fit someone properly, a better-fitting option should be found.
What is the difference between ladies' fit and unisex workwear?
Unisex workwear is usually cut to male proportions. Ladies' fit garments have adjusted shoulder, bust, waist and hip proportions and shorter back and sleeve lengths, and women's safety footwear is built on narrower lasts.
Is there maternity workwear?
Some workwear ranges include maternity options. When a worker is pregnant, review her risk assessment and check that her PPE and clothing still fit and protect properly as the pregnancy progresses.
