Security Workwear: Authority, Visibility and All-Weather Comfort
Security workwear has to do more than most uniforms. From door supervisors and retail security to mobile patrols and event stewards, the kit must project authority, work in all weathers and often meet visibility standards too. This guide covers what to look for in each layer, from shirts and jackets to hi-vis and boots.
Why presentation matters in security
Presentation is a working tool in security. A smart, clearly identifiable uniform, typically black or navy trousers, an epauletted shirt or polo and a jacket marked SECURITY, commands respect, deters trouble before it starts and reassures the public. Reflective SECURITY printing across the back and chest helps identification day and night.
Keep the look consistent across the team, with the same colours, logo position and wording on every garment. Plan for the SIA licence too, as front-line licence holders must wear it where it can be seen while working. Our embroidery and printing service can add your company logo and SECURITY wording to each item.
Layering for all-weather comfort
The job is mostly spent standing, walking and working outdoors, so comfort and weather protection matter enormously. Build the uniform in layers that officers can add or remove as conditions change.
- Base layer: breathable polos and shirts for summer and indoor posts.
- Mid layer: fleeces and softshells for the shoulder seasons.
- Outer layer: serious waterproof, insulated jackets for winter nights on the door or the gate. Look for taped seams, a hood and pockets that take a radio and notebook.
- Extras: thermal base layers and gloves for long static posts in winter.
Hi-vis for security staff
Hi-vis security jackets and vests combine EN ISO 20471 visibility with security branding for traffic management, car parks and events. The standard has three classes, with Class 3 the most visible. The right class depends on the risk, so check your risk assessment and your client's or principal contractor's site rules before ordering.
A vest is the most flexible option, as it goes over any jacket, while hi-vis jackets suit officers who spend whole shifts near traffic. Keep printed logos and wording to a sensible size, because covering too much fluorescent or reflective material can affect the garment's certification. Our guide to hi-vis classes explains the differences.
Footwear and finishing details
Footwear takes a pounding too. Lightweight, slip-resistant boots with cushioning and ankle support keep patrols comfortable through twelve-hour shifts, with safety-rated boots for industrial sites. Under EN ISO 20345:2022 all safety footwear passes a basic slip test, and the optional SR marking means it has also passed a tougher test with glycerine.
Details finish the look: epaulettes, ID armbands, clip-on ties for safety, and beanies or caps with SECURITY branding. Clip-on ties come away if grabbed, which is why they're the standard choice for door work.
Quick answers
What do security guards wear?
Most wear black or navy trousers, an epauletted shirt or polo and a jacket marked SECURITY, with hi-vis for traffic, car park or event duties. Front-line SIA licence holders also need to wear their licence where it can be seen.
Why do security guards wear clip-on ties?
A clip-on tie comes away if someone grabs it, so it can't be used to pull or choke the wearer.
Do security staff need to wear hi-vis?
It depends on the role. Staff working near vehicles, in car parks or at events often need hi-vis to EN ISO 20471, and the client's or site's rules may set the class.
